Summary: A Blessing in Artistry and Inspiration
Rating: 5

I saw Jennifer George at Tri Community a few months ago. What an inspiration she is. A true artist encouraging others how to dig a little deeper and explore, to reach and do something new...to try something different. This book was on my list in my Amazon cart to buy. I bought it from Jennifer that night, truly blessed and amazed at "timing"...as I was shooting my 1st maternity session a few days later! As I have gone through this book, I love the simplicity, the specifics and detail. Again, I am very inspired by the artistry and stories or HOW and WHY...the realness of Jennifer to share transparently what is taking place and how she or the client may have felt or the emotion being manifested and most importantly the relationship developing. Respecting this special time in a woman's life and getting to be a part of it are a gift. I have been using this book and referencing it for many reasons. It is very helpful to me with the sketches of how the lighting was set up or where natural lighting was coming from, what to look for ect. Thank you AMHERST ...we need MORE Jennifer George books, she is a great teacher and her writing is easy to follow. Jennifer, CONGRATULATIONS on a WINNER of a BOOK. I will definately be recommending it to fellow photographers.
Blessings to you!

Product Description:

In the last decades of the 20th century, successive British Governments have regarded adolescent pregnancy and childbearing as a significant public health and social problem. Youthful pregnancy was once tackled by attacking young, single mothers but New Labour, through its Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, linked early pregnancy to social exclusion rather than personal morality and aimed, instead, to reduce teenage pregnancy and increase young mothers' participation in education and employment. However, the problematisation of early pregnancy has been contested, and it has been suggested that teenage mothers have been made scapegoats for wider, often unsettling, social and demographic changes. The re-evaluation of early pregnancy as problematic means that, in some respects, teenage pregnancy has been 'made' and 'unmade' as a problem. Focusing on the period from the late-1990's to the present, "Teenage Pregnancy" examines who is likely to have a baby as a teenager, the consequences of early motherhood and how teenage pregnancy is dealt with in the media. The author argues that society's negative attitude to young mothers is likely to marginalise an already excluded group and that efforts should be focused primarily on supporting young mothers and their children. This comprehensive examination of teenage pregnancy focuses on the situation in the UK, but will be useful for readers in other developed world countries. It will be of interest to students in sociology, social policy, health studies and public health, and also to policymakers and young people's interest groups.

The Pregnancy Test

The Pregnancy Test
By Erin McCarthy

    Publication Date:   2005-10-01
    ISBN-10 / ASIN:   0758208472

Product Description:

Ordinarily, I'm a fan of pink-lovely colour, does smashing things for the complexion. But not when it's the bright, glaring stripe staring back at me on the pregnancy test. Then, pink is the colour of major oops, of morning sickness, of boyfriends who seemed decent but now are part of some Jerk Witness Protection Program. Still, I've got a few things going for me-bitter humour, a divine right to eat till I'm the size of Marlon Brando, and good friends who've managed to get me a job interview with one Damien Sharpton: in need of a personal assistant, and some say, a good, swift kick in the arse. If you want to make a lasting impression, by all means, toss your cookies in your future boss's wastebasket, which is located directly between his excruciatingly sexy legs. Apparently, Mr. Gorgeous-But-Unbearably-Anti-Social must like personal assistants who violate his trash can, because I got the job. And if I can avoid him via text messaging for the next seven months of health insurance, everything will be just fine. Except that he's just asked-no, insisted-that I go with him on a business trip to the Caribbean. Gulp. Ordinarily, this would be cause for celebration. Ordinarily, I'd shave my legs, pack my bikini, revel in day-glo drinks and my seething lust for Mr. Swarthy-And-Secretive. But there's nothing ordinary about this situation...which means it could be absolutely extraordinary...

Summary: Funny, Steamy... Just a GREAT Romance Story
Rating: 5

This book was great. There was humor, great loves scenes and an interesting plot that got me hooked. Falling in love with your boss is hard enough, but also being pregnant by another man has to be the worst. Damian is a broody man with a tragic past that has hardened his heart and only a lovely Brit who is his assistant can help heal the pain and melt his heart. This is the first book I read by Erin McCarthy, but definitely not the last. I grab several of her other books and cannot wait to get reading!

Summary: Huge McCarthy fan, but this one is not one of my favorites
Rating: 4

I can usually depend on getting an excellent read when I purchase an Erin McCarthy book. I absolutely love Houston, I Have A Problem, Heiress For Hire, and A Date With The Other Side. I went in reading The Pregnancy Test with excitement and high hopes of another excellent read. The Pregnancy Test fell short of the mark for me. I feel that probably most of the reason why is that I just didn't care for the hero and heroine like I do with her other stories. It was hard for me to sympathize with the heroine. It wasn't a lie exactly, but she neglected to tell the hero, her boss, that she was pregnant. This really bothered me especially after he asks her to go to the Caribbean with him. Plus, the whole story of Damien's first wife and her murder was a little too much. Pretty much everything with this story is too much.
The story begins with the hero, Mandy going for an interview for a job. She gets somewhat sick in the elevator, and embarrasses herself because she insults Damien, the one she is interviewing with, without realizing that she is talking to Damien. Anyways, she gets the job and Damien becomes interested in getting to know Mandy. He has pretty much alienated himself from everybody since his wife's murder. He asks Mandy to go to the Caribbean with him for work related purposes, but also because he wants to get to know her better. She intrigues him because she is constantly trying to avoid him. Go figure there because she doesn't want him to know she is pregnant. Her relationship with the baby's father didn't work out. They start to grow closer while on the trip, and when Mandy realizes where things are headed with Damien (in the bedroom), she tells him about her pregnancy. Plus, she wanted to share with him the baby's first movements.
The second half of the story is about them going about home and trying to go back to the way things were between them with him being the boss and her the employee without any romantic entanglements. But now that they've been together, Damien is not so sure he can go back to being the loner that he once was. And Mandy doesn't know how she can continue to work for him when she has developed deeper feelings for him. There are some very cute and humorous moments especially in this book, like when Damien reads a pregnancy guide and gets to the section on having sex while pregnant. Too funny! The Pregnancy Guide is not my favorite Erin McCarthy book, but it was ok. 4 stars!

Summary: A Pretty Good Read
Rating: 4

It's a pretty good read.

A little bit erotic. Some parts I'll admist made me blush lol but they were very well writtin.

Great for a summer read.

Summary: Pretty Crude
Rating: 2

I started this book really into it, thinking it would be a great read. And it was, up until the Caribbean trip. The sex scenes were so overly graphic, you'd think a teenage boy had written them. And the characters just got dumb after that. It was really hard for me to finish, and I agree with some of the other reviewers who saw the ending from a mile away. Initially I was going to try some of the author's other books, but this one was unnecessarily raunchy in my opinion.

Summary: Heartwarming, sexy and funny all in one!
Rating: 5

I found myself cracking up so many times throughout this book. At the same time the book was sexy and pulled at your heartstrings. My only complaint is that I want to know more about what happens with Mandy & Damien. I felt the ending was a tad rushed, but I still loved the book. I actually read this through the library but I am planning on purchasing this book for my personal collection - I can definitely see myself wanting to read it again. I highly recommend it!

Product Description:

There is no longer any doubt that the inherited genetic constitution of the individual has a large influence on the entire life cycle, from human fetal development and pre- and postnatal growth to subsequent health status. However, growing evidence suggests that this predisposition is not rigid, but that early genetic imprinting, caused by exposure to a diverse spectrum of nutrients, macromolecules, microbial agents and other cellular or soluble components present in the external environment, is also of importance. According to this concept of the developmental origins of adult diseases, intrauterine and early life events play an important role in the etiology of human diseases: there seems to exist a critical >window of opportunity' in the human infant before and during pregnancy, and up to 24 months of age. Altered exposure to different environmental agents during this critical period may determine the nature of responses in the perinatal period, and the expression of specific disease states in later life. The papers presented in this publication thus focus on the impact of perinatal growth, nutrition, environmental microflora, and host immune responses on the outcome of health and disease in later life.

Raising Twins: From Pregnancy to Preschool

Raising Twins: From Pregnancy to Preschool
By Shelly Vaziri Flais MD FAAP

    Publisher:   American Academy Of Pediatrics
    Number Of Pages:   200

    ISBN-10 / ASIN:   1581103441
    ISBN-13 / EAN:   9781581103441

Product Description:

Offering practical, “can-do” advice for anxious parents expecting or already caring for twins, this handbook guides from the first news of twins’ impending arrival and continues through their early childhood. From how to set up the nursery, synchronize feeding and sleeping schedules, and potty train two children at once to discipline, family dynamics, and fostering individuality, this doctor-cum-mom shares her experiences of what works and what doesn’t and encourages parents to not only survive but also enjoy their twins’ early years. A special appendix on caring for triplets as well as preterm babies is also included.

Summary: Twins advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics
Rating: 5

Raising Twins has been a very helpful book for our family. It is practical, down-to-earth, and filled with trusted advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics. I found it fun and easy to read, and liked how it tackles twins' different ages and stages in chronological order so you can quickly find what you're looking for.

Summary: I expected more from a pediatrician / mother of twins
Rating: 3

I bought 3 books from Amazon to help educate myself on my twin pregnancy: 1) When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, 2) Twin Sense, and 3) Raising Twins. The 1st one has the most in-depth and medical information, which I find to be a huge help, particularly the section on specific nutrition requirements, which was hard to find anywhere else. The 2nd book is also quite good. I like the way it is organized and the tips it gives on what items to borrow or buy, and in what quantities. The 3rd book seems merely anecdotal when compared to the others. I had hoped for more since it was written by a pediatrician and mother of twins, but I found it to be light on content and completely superfluous given the more detailed information contained in the other two. I would recommend the book -- When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads -- very highly.

Summary: Practical, specific advice to happily raise twins
Rating: 5

It can be scary to find out you're pregnant with twins- read this book, and you'll know what to do. Dr. Flais gives encouraging advice on how to handle two babies without losing your mind! I also like that she has kids in addition to her twins, and gives tips about family balance. Many twins are born early so the appendix about preterm birth is especially informative. I'm going to tell the triplet moms in my multiples club about the triplet appendix, too.

Summary: Best of the Twins Books I've Bought
Rating: 5

I'm a mom of 2 1/2-year-old twin boys, and I own five different books about raising twins. Flais' book is the best one by far because it's more honest than the others. She is very adamant that synchronizing your twins' skeds is key -- when one wakes up to eat, you wake the other one up. Period. I totally agree. Feeding them back-to-back will make you insane. Also, it is refreshing to read from a doctor that pacificers are not a good idea. I never used them -- just one more habit to break.

She also reminds you that you need to treat your twins as individuals, something that is easy to forget when you are so busy.

The best tips are in boxes, so they are easy to find. Plus, this book is short. No mom of twins has time to read more!

Summary: Practical and balanced
Rating: 5

As a pediatrician taking care of many families with multiples, I find that Dr. Flais' book is a practical and east-to-read guide which answers many basic care issues that parents face. She strikes a nice balance with her advice, recognizing that not all families function identically, and that there is not only one specific solution to all problems (which is a characteristic of parenting books that should be sought after in general). She also acknowledges that not every individual situation that parents encounter will go as smoothly as hoped, but if one stays true and consistent to your goals as a parent, increased success will generally be obtained over time.

There are a number of very practical tips in this book to help parents of multiples streamline their days, to be more efficient with routine tasks (feeding, toilet training for instance) and to be more cost-conscious at the same time. Many of her suggestions are applicable for raising any child (singleton or twin) and are well within the mainstream of parenting advice (such as the need for consistency with discipline strategies, the importance of adequate sleep etc.) I give her credit however for stressing the importance of making sure ALL members of the family are taken care of (including the parents) and the challenges that raising children can place on the relatioships within the parent. I think she places appropriate emphasis on the functioning of all the relationships within the family (not just parent-child).

The book is written with a positive yet realistic outlook on the different challenges presented by raising twins rather than a single child. These differences are not made out to be insurmountable or more difficult however, which should provide optimism to parents. She points out several joyful life moments that twins uniquely experience, which should provide parents a lot of positive feelings about their own capabilities and that of their children.

Summary: Very Helpful
Rating: 5

This was a very helpful book during my pregnancy. It clearly explains every phase of the pregnancy. With so many books written by "professionals" it is nice to know that it was written by a OB/GYN who deals with this on an everyday basis. It was the only book that I needed during my pregnancy.

Summary: Absolute Beginner's Guide to Pregnancy - Definite Must Read!
Rating: 5

I really enjoyed this book. It is a definite must for all expectant mothers, especially first timers, and anyone anticipating pregnancy. I also think it would be great for Dads as well. I found this book to be thorough, detailed and very easy to read and understand. It is an excellent source of reference for valuable information and answers any and all questions that I may have had. I couldn't think of a thing that wasn't covered in this book. Knowledge is necessary, beneficial and very comforting. To have a book that is this informative and enlightening at this most important time of our lives is truly strengthening. This book addresses all aspects of pregnancy in a user friendly, fun and lighthearted way. I highly recommend this book!

Summary: Look no more - this one has it all!
Rating: 5

I wish I'd had a book like this around when I was an expectant parent. I'd have read it cover to cover, many times over (which I did, anyway, even though my youngest is now a teenager). That is simply how good this book is.

What makes it a standout:

1. It has sections on EVERY stage of pregnancy, from the very first days to the final trimester. As soon as that pregnancy test comes back positive, an expectant parent could use the detailed list in the first chapters to find the right doctor and hospital, as well as learn what separates one hospital from another. This helps maximize the chances of a good fit in all areas - parent, doctor and hospital.

2. There are case studies based on actual patients along with lively comments from the co-author, herself a mother of five. The combined medical and parental perspectives are a delight to read.

3. The book was co-authored by both a doctor and a parent. One author is a doctor who has delivered over a thousand babies, the other a publisher who is the mother of five children herself. As a result, there is plenty of medical detail combined with down to earth questions and answers, information that anyone can read and understand.

4. First-time parents will be prepared for the physcial and emotional changes that occur in each trimester of pregnancy, from morning sickness to mood swings . Reading this section made me realize yet again how much I could have benefited from this book (and how I could have saved my obstetrician from many a panicky phone call). There is much reassurance here for the first time expectant parent - and even experienced expectant parents may learn something new (I certainly did).

5. All the practical matters are covered, from finding great maternity clothes to dealing with work.

6. Finally, the glossary at the back of the book will keep you from shaking your head and muttering, "Uh-huh..." with a glassy stare when your doc starts throwing around medical terms like 'Rhogham' or 'Pfannestiel skin incision'.

In short, you can't do better than this one. Highly recommended!

Summary: Absolute Beginner's Guide to Pregnancy
Rating: 5

There are many great milestones in a woman's life which are easily and happily expected and accepted. The memorable firsts may include first day of school, first dance, first date, first prom, first love and first pregnancy. Most of these rites of passage are joyful events but some are fraught with fear or dread.
Dr. John Q. Adams' Absolute Beginner's Guide to Pregnancy is written specifically to allay the fears of a woman's first pregnancy. Dr. Adams is a Board Certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist who has provided many years of women's health care. His book is a clear, concise, well written work which deals with all aspects of pregnancy and early motherhood. It is easy to read and deals with a plethora of information which is easily understood by the lay reader. All aspects of pregnancy and delivery are clearly explained. The chapters explaining prepregnancy preparation, hospital and caregiver selection are especially informative. Each of the three trimesters of pregnancy specifically provides information on maternal changes and development of the baby. Concerns such as exercise, circumcision, work, breast or bottle feeding anesthesia during labor are presented in a crisp and unbiased fashion. I especially appreciated the labor, delivery and cesarean section chapters

This book is a must for any woman who is pregnant and especially if it is her first time.

I am certain that this tome will become a classic of pregnancy, labor, delivery, newborn baby and after delivery information.

It’s Time for a Delicious Revolution By Dr. Alan Greene

Konrad Lorenz made his mark by studying a special type of learning where key exposures during a critical and sensitive window of development can have a lasting influence – a process he called imprinting. The famous example of this is imprinting in geese. Newly hatched goslings are programmed to follow the first moving objects they see. They quickly become imprinted on this object and will move their little feet fast to keep up with it. This is highly adaptive. Most of the time. Usually this moving magnet is the gosling’s mother.

Lorenz showed, however, that if he were the first mover that a gosling saw, it would be imprinted on Lorenz and follow him about, refusing to follow a goose. A goose could even imprint on a toy train and ignore other geese, even its own mother. Later, as adults, these geese would even choose toy trains for their life partners (which didn't work out well for the geese -- or the trains). Lorenz won the Nobel Prize for this work in 1973.

We’ve known for at least thirty years from animal studies that very early flavor experiences change which foods will later be preferred. Within five years of Lorenz’s Nobel Prize, food imprinting had already been demonstrated in snapping turtles, chickens, gulls, dogs, and cats.

Human babies also learn by imprinting, though ours is more complex, more forgiving, and occurs during a longer critical window. In particular human babies imprint on food. This is a highly adaptive mechanism -- but in the second half of the twentieth century we have unwittingly imprinted our children on the wrong tastes and textures. They will chase after junk food and kids meals, and ignore a delicious, ripe peach or tomato packed with nutrients their bodies crave.

Feeding Baby Green unveils the key windows of opportunities for our children, and how the imprinting occurs using not just taste but all of the senses, from pregnancy through age 2 (and beyond -- with a final chapter giving an overview up to age 9).

At its core, Feeding Baby Green is a revolutionary approach to cultivating Nutritional Intelligence, the age-appropriate ability to recognize and enjoy healthy amounts of great food. Pregnancy and the first two years of life are critical windows for learning Nutritional Intelligence, an important, newly described strand of development. Most American kids of the last few decades are Nutritionally Delayed. Thankfully, this is easy to remedy.

Summary: Feeding Baby Green
Rating: 3

I will have to agree with another reviewer when she says this book is good for beginners. For those who have a fairly decent knowledge of nutrition and healthier alternatives, on the other hand, this book may simply be more of the same.
While I enjoyed what the book had to say regarding the "magical" properties of herbs etc, my largest complaint would be the lack of recipes throughout the book. There are some, and while the text does not call itself a cookbook, I believe more recipes, with a background on why they are the best choice for your child, would have been more suited to my own personal needs.
If you have had children or are one who is extremely health conscious, you are not likely to find a host of profound information here. That being said, it is certainly a viable guide for those who want to change their nutritional lifestyles for themselves, their kids and their environment.

Summary: Great for beginners
Rating: 3

If you're nutritionally challenged, or just aren't sure how to pack more into your meals during pregnancy and while your child is young, this is a great starting place. There are helpful recipes scattered throughout the book including but not limited to:
Cinnamon-Apple Oatmeal
Penne with Broccoli and Sun-Dried Tomatoes (tried it, very tasty!)
Bombay Vegetable Stew
Calabecitas
Spinach Tomato Puree
Black Bean Tomato Ragout

The recipes range from total family eats to baby's first foods and are fairly simple to prepare. We've tried most of them (except the baby foods because our youngest isn't there yet) and they've all been a hit with our two older boys, especially.

One of the things that I like about this book is that it talks about more than just HOW you SHOULD eat. It gives you helpful hints as to how to get your child to eat a wider variety of foods and actually enjoy it. It also gives you a concise biodiversity checklist in the back so you can see just how narrow or wide your dietary scope really is. The last chapter even covers older children, so you won't outgrow the book with the first year like I have found to be the case with several other parent/child nutrition books.

Overall, this was good. There were several points that I didn't agree with or that I felt I could find a better solution than what was being presented. For instance, when Dr. Greene talks about breastfeeding, he says that it is best, but it's like he's afraid to commit to that. Right after that, he talks about formula. Now, I've had 3 children and our first survived almost completely on formula for multiple reasons on both my end, as well as my baby's end. However, our second and third child were solely breastfed. I say that to show that I understand there is a time and place where formula can be beneficial. However, the way Dr. Greene presents the formula is what bothers me. If he doesn't think breastfeeding is best why go so far as to detail the best formulas? The book is about being green, and what, exactly, is GREEN abour formula? He also says in a later chapter that we shouldn't let food marketing and the food industry override our good judgement about what to eat, but it seemed to me that where formula was concerned, he wasn't totally committed to breastfeeding being the best option.

Bottom line: if you're looking for ways and reasons to expand your diet and get a healthier grip in your home, this is great for beginners. If you're already a bit more aware because of things like diabetes, Celiac Disease, or a health field occupation, this book may be less than what you need.

Summary: Feeding the Whole Family "Green"
Rating: 5

This book caught my eye as I am starting making baby food for my now 7 mos old daughter, after having failed miserably with my older kids. It said "Feeding Baby Green" so I knew it would help me there, but what I had no idea about was that it would give me such great ideas and insights about not only my older kids but my entire family as well. He starts off by talking about why we as adults have taste buds the way they are, that if we are like the general population we were fed the wrong food as children. That companies like Gerber only put 50% real food in their jars of food. So right there I knew I was reading the right type of book.

The book is in 4 parts:
1. General Nutrition "Intelligence"
2. Pregnancy
3. Babies
4. Toddlers and Beyond

I focused on the 2 latter parts because of where I am with my family, but I think the general nutrition part is incredibly eye opening people looking for good insights into why we eat what we eat. e also includes recipes throughout the book, like hummus, "Tex Mex" and "Sweetie Pie" to name a few.

He's also quick to point out that it's not always easy to make your own baby food, and that if you need a little extra help there are lots of places to get good organic food for your family these days. He includes a variety of websites to help you with that.

All in all, a great book to read in parts, or as a whole. I recommend this book to anyone interested in taking a better pathway to nutrition.

Summary: I don't exactly agree with the message but love the idea
Rating: 5

Let me explain. I don't buy into the manmade global warming business. I believe if you want to be green, learn how to save some energy, plant your own garden and shop locally. That being said, I find this book fascinating because I think it's a bunch of BS that kids are finicky. My parents were pretty strict with my sister and I when we we toddlers; too bad they weren't later on. Had they been, my eating styles would have been different.

What I found valuable is the recipes and the natural recipes. Start your children early so they become accustomed to the healthful foods, which will hopefully set them up as healthy adults. While I have no scientific research under my belt, I am convinced that the overprocessed, high sugar, high salt, etc. foods have made us sick. We already know about the obesity issue, but I'm convinced there are fertility issues that came from this.

My wife and I plan to use this as a guide for feeding our baby and the one we are expecting.

Summary: Excellent!
Rating: 5

This book has everything! If you're like me and a picky eater, you've probably wondered how to get your kids to eat things you don't eat. I was fed a very limited variety of foods as a child, and as a result I've always been very picky. This book explains why me and countless other Americans prefer the taste of packaged, processed foods loaded with salt and sugar, over fresh, wholesome, good food. So what did people do before the bland, jarred baby food of the industrial revolution hit store shelves? Read this book to find out!

What is included:

The definition of "baby" food
How to eat while pregnant to maximize the chances of your baby being an adventurous eater later on
How to introduce foods in a way your baby will find intriguing
Recipes
How we inadvertently teach our toddlers to become picky eaters
Facts about what's actually in baby food
How jarred baby food came to be in the first place
How to approach eating as "fun" and create enjoyable food experiences

You not only become educated on what to feed your baby, you become educated on the entire process of how consumers came to depend on Gerber and other baby food companies as the only way to feed a baby. I was always told that it wasn't safe to introduce too many varieties of fruits and veggies to a baby at once, but this book dispels that myth and so many others.

Summary: Great reference book!
Rating: 5

I borrowed this book from the library and referred to it several times during the first months of my pregnancy. Like other books from this publisher, the information is well-organized and concise with lots of graphs and photos. It's by no means encyclopedic though; for more in-depth info you may want to supplement this book with the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, or a similar tome.

Summary: very pleased

i loved the book. It is up to date and very easy to read, with pictures. The book is a must for any mother to be. Thank you so much

Summary: Great resource, very thorough and detailed...
Rating: 5

With the excitement of expecting our first child I went in search of finding a good book to answer the many questions from pregnancy to childbirth. I looked at several books, but this is the only one that had me sitting for hours reading every detail. I had to buy it!

The great thing about this book is its ease of use. The book is divided into 6 Sections, and within each Section are many Subsections:

1. Trying for a Baby
(Example of Subsection: We want to be parents. I've had a miscarriage. We're not getting pregnant. How will I know I'm pregnant?)
2. Now You're Pregnancy
3. Your 40-Week Journey
4. Labor and Birth
5. New parents
6. A New Life

Within each Subsection the authors use Question and Answer style to discuss things such as: preeclampsia, prenatal visits, exercise, baby development, how your body changes, how / when to tell people your pregnant, working while pregnant, breastfeeding, labor, emotions of childbirth and after, neonatal intensive care, safe sleeping positions, pain relief for delivery, homebirths and hospital births, and so much more. And to keep things diversified there's also questions and answers for your partner, and a section on your partners involvement throughout pregnancy and during delivery. Along the way are also Myths and Misconceptions.

The pages are printed on nice thick glossy paper so the many color pictures and drawings look crisp and clear. There is also a Sections tab running along the top of the pages; the one you're in stays colored so you know what Section you are in.

We chose to have a midwife deliver our baby so this book suits us fine. A midwife wrote the book, and many other midwives made contributions. I'm certain if there's a question you have it's bound to be answered here.

Product Description:

No strict diets, no scary guidelines--just the essential nutrition expectant moms need to start their babies on the road to lifelong health

All parents know that kids need nutritious foods as they grow. But new research confirms that what you eats during pregnancy can also profoundly affect the health of your baby when that baby becomes an adult--for better or for worse. Endorsed by the Harvard Medical School and written by one of the world's leading experts in nutrition for pregnant women and babies, this guide offers more solid information and medically sound advice on prenatal nutrition than any other book on the market.

Summary: Same old "SAD" (Standard American Diet) Advice
Rating: 3

Yes, there are some good things in this book, you probably already know them.

Avoid refined grains during pregnancy
Avoid smoking during pregnancy
Avoid alcohol during pregnancy

The typical diet advice seems to be parroted everywhere including this book.

*Low fat diet
*Pasteurized dairy only
*Eat lots of grains

This is a diet designed to create weak and poorly nourished children. While it is better than eating junk food, it isn't going to be nourishing.

The chapter about how prenatal nutrition is vital is definitely interesting, but the nutritional guidelines laid forth are not going to accomplish the best results. The author talks about mercury in fish being a concern and sites FDA evidence that 8 percent of women have high levels of mercury in their blood. But are we to believe this is from them eating pounds of tuna every week? Or is this from mercury laden drugs, pollution, food additives and fillings as the cause? Huge studies such as one recently published in Lancet, have shown that naturally occurring mercury in fish, even if it raises the mercury in the mother's blood stream, shows NO DANGER for pregnancy.

People need healthy fats from whole foods to be healthy. Pregnant women get essential vitamins from healthy fats, that's why even this book recommends fish, and eggs for pregnancy. But then it goes on to say that saturated fats are unhealthy, which doesn't make sense.

Diets of indigenous groups across the planet, who had healthy babies, and uncomplicated births knew what to eat during pregnancy. Special foods included raw grassfed dairy, sea foods which included the organs, and fatty foods from the land and sea. Healthy people never had refined flour, or "organic" breakfast cereals or soy milk. By returning to a whole foods diet based upon generations of healthy people, we can reclaim our pregnancy health. Learn how to do it in Healing Our Children: Because Your New Baby Matters! Sacred Wisdom for Preconception, Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting (ages 0-6).

Summary: Very informative
Rating: 4

I found this book full with tips and information on what to expect through pregnancy. I think it's worth the read to understand exactly why you need to eat healthy throug pregnancy.

Summary: Great Book
Rating: 5

I liked this book because it was the only book I could find with real information about artificial sweeteners. It seemed to be up to date and it gave the info understood from the most current research.

Summary: Good Source
Rating: 4

I read this book cover to cover and to be honest, I don't think I learned anything new. In fact there is surprisingly little time devoted to actually how/what to eat! It seems like most of the book is devoted to the idea that how you eat during pregnancy will affect your child's health later in life. So if you need motivation to reach for the veggies everyday, this would be a great book to read. But overall it's the same tips about what to avoid, eat from the food pyramid, etc. Having said that, I gave it four stars because even though the information isn't new, it feels good to get it from a reputable source since half the stuff you read, it's hard to tell if you can trust it. Additionally, there are some wonderful, easy, healthy recipes at the end of the book!

Summary: The bottom line: Get ready for baby!
Rating: 5

Kudos to Dr. Walker on the second publication (although I wish I had this one first!) on health and wellness for mothers and their babies.

This 'easy-to-ingest' book is an excellent resource for information on what to eat, what to avoid, and even includes tips on exercise and creative recipes for snack and mealtimes.

Take care of yourself, and take care of your baby!

Product Description:

Clinically, pregnancy acts as a stress test that unmasks maternal disease and may have long-term implications for maternal and fetal health. In Pulmonary Problems in Pregnancy, the editors provide a state-of-the art, comprehensive text focusing on common or complex pulmonary issues occurring in pregnancy. For the first time, leading experts in the fields of obstetric, pulmonary, and critical care medicine provide novel and practical insights into improving the respiratory care of the pregnant patient. The book is divided into three sections. The first few chapters introduce the reader to the normal physiologic changes that occur during pregnancy. A chapter on high altitude is included to illustrate the consequences of chronic hypoxia on maternal and fetal outcomes, to help extrapolate to the effects of chronic pulmonary conditions. The second section reviews general management principles, including diagnostic imaging and prescribing in pregnancy. The final section includes multiple chapters on specific, troubling pulmonary disorders. The specific chapters are intended to summarize the available literature, linking science to bedside, and provide management recommendations whenever possible. In all, Pulmonary Problems in Pregnancy is an essential text that will not only provide critical clinical guidance but also stimulate further investigation into this fascinating and under explored area of medicine.
